Invitations of Wisdom and Folly
Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, “Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says, “Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight.” Vs 1-6
Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. Vs 7-12
Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, “Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says, “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!” But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead. Vs 13-18
God is not only calling out to you to offer you His wisdom, He has prepared it perfectly to be delivered at the precise time you need it. He knows, and only He, what is ahead for you. He desires to give you knowledge and understanding so you can make the wisest of decisions. How has God invited you to receive his wisdom?
If someone offers you insult or abuse for trying to help them see truth, you should turn from them. Man cannot change the heart of a mocker. This is something only God can do. God can chose to use you to help change the mockers heart, but you cannot do it on your own power. Carefully seek God and His wisdom when approaching someone with a hardened heart. Is there someone God is calling you to speak truth to? When have you been mocked or hated for offering help or advice? How have you offered thanks for receiving correction that was needed?
Wisdom is not the only thing trying to seek your attention. Folly is calling you. She is loud, and lacks discipline or knowledge, so her offer can sound fun and carefree. The path she wants to lead you down is a dead end. It will not be filled with life that is ever growing in knowledge and understanding. When have you been tempted to leave discipline and knowledge behind? Who has been caught by the temptations of folly that could use your help?
My prayer for us today ~ Father God, thank you for the perfect plan and timing of all things you have prepared for us. I pray we would end each day praising and thanking you for the gift of wisdom we received from you, Amen
